GRANDMOTHER PAGE 1
Gabriela Gomes
my grandmother puts her feet in the sink
of the bathroom at Sears
she’s the newcomer
who can’t believe she’s dead
she saved my life by puncturing
my festering neck twice with her knife
germs flew like angels from one house to the next
we sprinkle the flour and the memory
i knew it once, the memory is dead
in some vague vapory heaven
while the old growl inside her
change like the seas
she reminded me each time
she has become a strange fish
lucid and small in the cool river of her body
the house is empty now
sea sounds sift in
ocean: speared on Pine needles here in Tenessee
summer cottons drift, equivalent to air
the village ate and ate and cleared its plate
the deer went over the grass
with wet hooves
to the river to drink
moves to my mind in the context of pure sorrow
like pomegranates in hell
all her signs say water
in the vacant room the flowers begin to dry
